Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can Changing Medicine Increase Sugar Levels Or Weight In A Child?
My 12 yr old boy is currently taking 2 mg respidone and we are considering changing to abilify. Looking to see the difference in these drugs. Can I expect another big weight gain? Does abilify push towards diabetes (his sugar already runs a little high) . I just need to know what to expect so we can make the best informed choice.
I have gone through your query. Both Respidone(Resperidone) and Abilify(Aripiprazole) are atypical anti Psychotic. You haven't mentioned about particular disease your son is suffering from. Long term use of resperidone leads to increase weight gain and may sometimes cause Diabetes. On the other hand, using Aripiprazole for long time may cause weight gain but very less as compared to former. To some of my patients it showed loss of appetite and weight loss but to minor extent. Change of medicine shall be done by your treating or local doctor.
Do consider a positive feedback as a credit to my work. Let me know if you have any further questions.
