Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I was diagnosed with complex partial seizures anf take 100mgs of Dilantin twice a day. I have been seizure free for 14months now.
A recent fasting blood test for high cholesterol resulted im Dr. saying no tylenol, no alcohol and no soda pop. I have no problem giving up alcohol as I do not drink and I can take something else for pain but why is it necessary to give up my Coca Cola
Regarding your concern, I agree with your doctor with the fact that you should avoid Coca Cola for two main reasons:
1- Your cholesterol levels: The sugar in regular soda might elevate your triglycerides, one of three types of lipids that comprise your cholesterol levels. The sugar calories in regular soda also could lead to weight gain, which can affect your cholesterol levels. So chronic intake of Coca Cola can compromise your cholesterol levels.
2-Your seizures. You should know that Coca Cola is a big deposit of caffeine which is a central nervos system excitatory substance. The intake of coca-cola can trigger seizures. Even if you are seizure free on medication, your central nervous system is more sensitive to excitatory substances like caffeine or alcohol.
So I highly recommend to avoid Coca Cola intake.
Hope to have been helpful!
Best regards,
Dr. Iliri
