Can Cigarette Smoking Cause Swelling In Feet And Ankles?
I m a female age 74, have pulmonary fibrosis, copd & one blocked carotid artery. I have had two strokes last year. I am currently on oxygen, blood thinners & few other medicines. I still smoke occasionally and noticed that my feet are swollen. Can smoking cigarettes cause swollen feet and ankles?
Understanding your concern. As per you are wondering if cigarette smoking cause swelling in feet and ankles . Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query , but in your case the symptoms are probably due to meralgia paresthetica. Other reasons can be gout , arthritis , organ failure like kidney failure or heart failure . Smoking can exaggerate the condition , so quit smoking . I would suggest you to consult orthopedic surgeon for proper examination. Doctor may order x-ray imaging , electromyography , nerve conduction study , nerve blockade with anesthesia . Doctor may prescribe corticosteroid injections , tricyclic antidepressants or gabapentin. FDoctor may refer you to nephrologist or cardiologist .
