I am taking cipralax-20 mg for the last 8 months to treat my anxiety disorder, fear etc. Recently I observed my fasting blood sugar is in between 100 to 110 mg/dl, sometime it is in between 60 to 70 mg/dl. I also carried out by Glucose tolerance test yesterday with 75 gm glucose. Fasting was 60 mg/dl, 1/2 hour was 177, 1 hr was 162 and 2 hours was 104 mg/dl. Prior to taking this medication, my fasting sugar use to bwtween 80 to 85 mg/dl. After this medication, I found fasting glucose has crossed in between 100 to 110 mg/dl. Additionally I am having strong history of diabetes. I usually go for a regular walk with full control on diet. Please advise do I need to worry if I continue taking this medication. My concern am I likely to be diabetic because of this medication. Should I continue this medication?

Hi,

Cipralex contains Escitalopram which doesn't cause diabetes or even predispose to it. Antidepressants may indirectly cause insulin resistance due to weight gain but don't directly cause it.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Rana Ahsan Javed, General & Family Physician
