Can Cold And Cough Affect Children Despite Taking The Flu Shot?

My Grandson is 3 years old. He came home on Friday with a runny nose and that led to a cough and a slight fever. He had a Flu shot 2 weeks ago, could this be the flu or is it just a cold. Today is the Full 3rd day of this and that cough is awful. He ate great Saturday and Sunday, but wouldn t eat very much at all today, just a yogurt, 1 cheese sandwich and some applesauce and that worries me, at what point should I take him to the ER or to visit his Dr.?

Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

The symptoms of the flu tend to be more severe than the cold.

There is normally associated joint and muscle pain, severe weakness, headaches etc with the flu.

It is possible that there may also be a bacterial infection of the chest if the cough is very very bad.
In that case antibiotics would be needed for resolution.

If the symptoms are improving even slightly then he is likely on the mend. eg improvement in appetite, activity level
If there is no improvement or worsening then he should see a doctor.

A mucolytic can help if the cough is wet and you are going to continue home treatment. This would help to break up the mucus so that it can be expelled eg guaifenesin, mucomyst

I hope this helps
