Can Diet And Exercise Reverse Mild Calcification Of Aorta?

A recent cardiac ultra sound test revealed mild calcification of the aorta. Can this condition be reversed or arrested by diet and excercise. I have been a long distance runner but because of a recent knee injury and arthroscopic surgery to remove some arthritis behind the knee cap, I have been unable to run. Started biking this week and also began walking, which does not offer the same level of exertion as running. I am 65 years old and in pretty good shape. (Blood pressure usually runs about 115/65).

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and thank you for your question. Mild calcification of the aorta is not a major concern. This occurs when there are cholesterol plaques formed in the vessels. It is possible to reverse some of this if you can get your LDL cholesterol to a very low level. This is hard to do with diet and exercise alone. What you can do with a great diet and regular exercise is keep this from progressing to more severe problem. Good luck to you and keep up the exercise and healthy diet.
