Can Dizziness, Lethargy, Forgetfulness And Mood Swings Be The Side Effects Of Taking Metoprolol Tartrate 100 Mg?

My husband was admitted to a hospital over the weekend after having fainted in church Sunday morning and going through the ER. His blood pressure was abnormally high for him-he suffers from high blood pressure, is diabetic, had a right nephrectomy and more. Among other things, at discharge, they changed one of his medications, Metoprolol ER Succinate 100 mg 2x daily to METOPROLOL TARTRATE 100 mg 2x daily. In two days, he has started to experience dizziness, lethargy, forgetfulness, mood swings. The doctor who prescribed the change is staff doctor at the hospital and we are not scheduled to meet with her again until next Monday. Should I just go ahead and switch him back to the Succinate now? Oh, I need to mention - he was on this drug a couple of years ago and we had to switch him.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Metoprolol Succinate and Metoprolol Tartrate are used to treat hypertension and other heart diseases, Metoprolol Tartrate treats more conditions than Metoprolol succinate and is a better choice to treat heart failure and unstable angina.

Their side effects generally are the same and do not cause mood swings. Dizziness might be related to low blood pressure level so I suggest you to measure it.

In my opinion, he can switch back to Metoprolol Succinate, but you have to measure his blood pressure regularly if it increases you have to add another medication to his treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
