Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My question is can drinking gatorade cause fatty liver disease? He does not drink or smoke, he is type2 diabetic my husband is currently in hospital and the only finding is fatty liver. He is suffering from nausea, dry heaves and abdominal pain stabbing right in the center. CT scan is clear of any obstructions ect. all look normal only finding is fatty liver. Ultra sound of Gallbladder is normal, fatty liver Findings Gallbladder appears sonographically normal with no stones, wall thickening orpericholecystic fluid.Common bile duct measures 3.5 mm.The liver demonstrates a increased echogenic pattern suggesting fattyinfiltration.Impression1. Hepatic steatosis.2. No sonographic evidence of gallbladder or biliary abnormalities.
1. As gatorade is a health drink which contains 56 gram of sugar per bottle and since he is a type II diabetic thus is the reason for high blood sugar and as it contains 800 mg of sodium thus is the cause of high blood pressure.
2. Diabetes does not cause fatty liver disease but it is the associated obesity and insulin resistance which is the cause of NAFLD [non alcoholic fatty liver disease], so importantly there are no drugs to treat fatty disease but this condition is treated indirectly with lifestyle changes such as losing weight, controlling blood sugar and triglycerides [fats] in the blood that can contribute to fatty liver.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Munish Sood
