Can Emphysema Cause Shortness Of Breath And Tiredness?

Good Day Doctor. My father is 70 years old. Was presenting with tiredness and breathing issues when he did something. We had a stent fitted in April. only to find that the breathlessness has got worse. We have seen a lung specialist and he has given my father two pumps and antibiotics as he says the lungs are not absorbing enough oxygen. After using it for a while there has been no improvement. When they give him the pump in office and run test the oxygen levels improve but he is still breathless. Cooking, general walking lifting light objects make it worse. Are there any suggestions from your side? if it is emphysema what can we do to help him?

The reasons for breathlessness in your father's case

1. Emphysema (it is chronic lung disease and irreversible) for this, needs to be evaluated by Pulmonologist. Especially oxygen levels at rest and during mild exercise, and Pulmonary function test. Mainly treatment is Inhalers (pumps) and if necessary oxygen support and lifestyle modification.

2. As you mentioned regarding stent placement, what is your father's cardiac function levels? Low cardiac pumping also causes easy fatigue and breathlessness. And is there any swelling of both lower limbs? For this treatment are diuretics to remove fluid and lifestyle modification.

3. Check for hemoglobin levels also once, because of low Hb levels causes easy fatigue and breathlessness.
