Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can Excess Withholding Of Water Lead To Problems With High Sodium Levels?
A child with a background of trauma and abuse, has a global developmental delay and an obsession with food and water. The child (and his brother) both present with problems with high sodium levels. Could there be a cause of high sodium other than the care givers with holding the water too much, due to the child s obsession with drinking?
There could be many causes of high sodium levels, including diseases affecting the kidneys (in which too much free water is excreted), affecting hormone secretion in the brain, or gastrointestinal problems (usually involving diarrhoea).
But inadequate water intake is one of the first things we consider.
If they still have high sodium with adequate hydration, urine studies can be done to see if the urine is too dilute, which would cause the high sodium.
If it was dilute, with global development delay I would consider a problem with hormone secretion in the brain, possibly caused by trauma.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Aaron Branch, General & Family Physician
