Can Genital Herpes Be Contracted Through Oral Sex?
Thank you. If I am a woman with type 1 herpes, and I perform oral sex on a man, will I transmit type2 genital herpes to him even though my bloodwork shows I am negative for type 2 herpes? I would never kiss or perform oral sex with a man if any cold sores were present, I never get cold sores but I had chicken pox as a child. Thank you
Herpes is a viral infection that can be spread through skin contact. Because the possibility of viral shedding the transmission can happen during vaginal, anal and oral sex as well even if you are using protection.
Condoms for men and dams for women give protection in oral sex. You don't seem to have mouth herpes so it is a low chance to give herpes to him. If you have any active sore or virus shedding is occurring you can infect your partner if he gives you an oral.
Taking suppressive therapy (usually velacyclovir is given) for herpes reduces the chances to infect the partner as the virus shedding days are reduced throughout the year.
To summarize I don't think that there is not too much to worry about. You both need to value the risks and take appropriate care for each other. Go through your adventures when no sores are present and use protection.
Good luck Dr.Albana
