Hello, I am 50 years old, and when I was 21, I had developed severe pain under my left patella . I had an Arthroscopic procedure done under general anaesthetic , and when I woke from the Surgery, the Orthopaedic Surgeon advised me he and his team found a blood clot, and removed it. He advised me when I got home, to rest my knee for two weeks and to keep it elevated, and to keep weight off it as much as possible. He advised that if I needed to go the kitchen or bathroom, I should walk as short a distance as possible, and it would be better if I was assisted, to help my knee joint heal as properly as possible. The Surgeon strongly advised me that the only physical activity I was to focus on, was to perform knee muscle strengthening exercises the physiotherapist had shown me to do. I was still living at my parents house at the time, my father took time off work to take me home and supposedly help me as the Surgeon had instructed him. From the first day I was back home, my father couldn t stand to see me in his words, just sitting down and doing nothing because he thought it was best for me to stand up and walk around, and in his opinion, the physiotherapeutic exercises were useless and not doing anything (my father had no medical training; he was a mechanical fitter in a factory). On the second day he decided to work on a loose shelf in the kitchen, and after my brother and mother left the house, forced me to stand up, and help him to hold up a shelf whilst he tried to work out what had made it loose. He then ordered me to stand whilst I held the shelf level, and if I moved it even slightly because I was trying to balance on my right knee, keeping my weight off my left knee, he d raise his voice and verbally abuse me. He then told me to wait and keep holding up the shelf, whilst he went out to the back yard to his garden shed, to look for something . He came back after half an hour and seemed amused and told me to stop holding up the shelf, and told me to go back to doing nothing . During the time he was in the back yard, I kept trying to balance myself on my right knee, and felt a growing discomfort in my left knee. I kept my knee raised and only walked the short distance to go to the bathroom or kitchen. After that happened, when I continued to do the exercises, I felt a warm discomfort, and what felt like tightness or stiffness between my femur and tibia . My father took me back for my appointment to see the Orthopedic Surgeon at his practice, two weeks after leaving the hospital. The Surgeon examined my knee joint and discovered it had not healed properly, and asked me, seeming a bit annoyed his instructions had been ignored, if I had done any physical activity whilst he was further examining my knee, as the Surgeon lowered his head, I noticed my father glaring at me out of the Surgeon s field of view. I lied to the Surgeon and said no I hadn t . He then proceeded to advise me to contact him if I had any further problems. Since that time, I sometimes experience a small ache to a sharp pain in my left knee where the blood clot used to be, when the weather gets cold, or even occasionally seemingly spontaneously in warm weather. Or instead of pain there is stiffness, and sometimes my left tibia feels loose and seems to feel like it can move freely a limited distance either sideways or up and down. These symptoms disappear by themselves, and sometimes my left knee feels a little tender and weak. Could these aches, pains and discomforts that are became more frequent as I aged, and now seem to occur about once every day or every few days be a result of my father s past abuse 28 years ago? Even if I had not allowed myself to be intimidated by my abusive father, and told the truth to the Orthopaedic Surgeon, would he have been able to correct the knee problem? Should I ask my GP for a referral to see an Orthopaedic Surgeon, or is it too late for my left knee? If I just ignore the symptoms as I have done for the past 28 years, what are the odds I will eventually need knee replacement surgery when I m older? I am an University qualified Electrical/Electronics Engineer and wondered what precautions should I take if I work at a desk, compared to if I need to go to an outdoor installation, or inside a factory floor? Please advise. Thank You and Best Regards.
