Hi,
Liver pain is usually felt in the upper right area of the abdomen, just below ribs.
Usually it is a full, vague pain but sometimes it can be severe and radiate towards back. Vagus nerve is the the longest nerve of the body. It passes through the neck and thorax to the abdomen. In the abdomen, liver is supplied by vagus nerve. In case of pain in the liver, vagus nerve can carry pain towards back from the liver.
Fatty liver may result from accumulation of fat in the liver. Some fat on liver is normal, but when it starts to accumulate to greater than 5-10%, it can start to develop permanent
liver damage and cirrhosis. It can also develop
liver failure and
liver cancer. Fatty liver may be caused by genetics, obesity, diet, DM,
rapid weight loss,
high cholesterol or high triglycerides, alcohol consumption etc. Sometimes, it may develop severe pain in the right upper quadrant which can radiate towards back.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Zubayer Alam, General and Family Physician,
