Can Having Unprotected Sex A Day Before Nexplanon Removal Cause Pregnancy?

Hello. I had a question concerning the nexplanon. I got it removed, but I had unprotected sex a day or two before. I understand that sperm can live up to three days. It is now two and a half weeks later, and I am experiencing many pregnancy symptoms including: excessive milky discharge, small headaches and nausea in the mornings, vivid dreams (mostly nightmares, which is uncommon for me), fatigue, and a change in libido. Are these symptoms common with the nexplanon removal? I am waiting for my period to come, but it wont be here for another two weeks. Should I keep taking them (Maybe three days apart)? Also, the symptoms began right after my period, which was a week after the removal. I took two urine tests and they both came out negative. Is this because It might be too early? Thanks!

Hi,

Nexplanon implant contains etonogestrel, a female natural sex hormone called progesterone that is used in the prevention of unwanted pregnancies from unprotected sexual encounters for up to 3 years. But, a woman shouldn't have sexual encounter seven days before removing Nexplanon implant, if she doesn't want to get pregnant. But she wants to have sexual encounter, then an alternative barrier method should be applied. Because, there is a risk of someone getting pregnant, once the Nexplanon implant is removed, as the semen of man can live for up to 7 days as well as can fertilize the egg.
Again, after removing Nexplanon implant, the user may experience some adverse effects like mood swings, headache, nausea or vomiting, weight gain, nipple discharge, nightmares, fatigue, changes in libido, changes in menstrual cycle etc., which may persist for a few days to a few weeks. If any woman thinks that she might get pregnant after removal of Nexplanon implant, then she should do urine for pregnancy test 7 days after the next missed period.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
