General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

For your question about whether low thyroid (hypothyroidism) can ever return to normal on its own, it depends on the cause. In your case, the most common cause would be chronic autoimmune thyroiditis or Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Though it is rare for this kind of low thyroid to go back to normal, it does occur, and it is possible this has happened in your case.

It is possible for Levothyroxine to cause heart palpitations, but this would only occur if it was causing your thyroid levels to be too high. If they were normal as your doctor told you, then this medication shouldn't be causing these symptoms.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Aaron Branch,
