Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can Hepatitis C Infection Be Transmitted Through Unprotected Intercourse?
I recently found out that an ex of mine that cheated on me slept with a girl who has Hep C and another girl that could possibly have it. Me and him never used a condom. What s the chances of me getting it? I ve had STD checks via blood about a month ago and everything was negative but I m not sure if they include this in the test.
Hepatitis C is a disease that causes inflammation and infection of the liver. This condition develops after being infected with the hepatitis C virus (HCV). The virus can cause both acute and chronic hepatitis, ranging in severity from a mild illness lasting a few weeks to a serious, lifelong illness. Hepatitis C is transmitted through blood-to-blood contact with someone infected with HCV. It can spread through:
1. organ transplants
2. blood transfusions
3. sharing items such as razors or toothbrushes
4. sharing needles
5. childbirth (from a mother with hepatitis C to her baby)
6. sexual contact (unprotected intercourse.)
On most occasions, only HIV and HBsAg are included while testing for STDs. Most laboratories have started inclusion of HCV testing as well. However, if not included, it needs to be requested and then it needs to be got tested.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Ashakiran S,
