Can High Blood Pressure Lead To Memory Loss In Elderly Patients?
My mother is 81 yrs old. she had an episode 2 days ago where her blood pressure rose to 186 and she suffered some memory loss. took her to emerg. everything seemed to be okay although she lost 5 hrs of memory. Today her pressure seems to have gone up again and reads 160/90. should we be concerned & take her to emerg again or call 911?
Hi welcome to HCM. Untreated chronic blood pressure in the elderly can cause small lacunar infarcts. These infarcts can lead to memory disturbances on long term.Such vascular infarcts can even exacerbate the senile dementia of the elderly.Such cognitive disturbances can be prevented by good proteinous diet and timely control of blood pressure.Memory disturbances can be diagnosed through MMSE-Mini mental state examination.Consult your neurologist through further queries. Thank you.
