Can I Take 'citalopram' Along With 'sudafed' Prescribed For Cold?

I have been given sudafed at the chemist as i woke the other morning and couldnt hear properly. Sounds and vibrations were echoing around my head. My balance has also been affected.

I also take citalopram 40mg but stopped taking them as it says not to take with antidepressants but it has been 3 days without my antidepressant and i think i should start taking them again. Is this ok?

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello thanks for asking from HCM

Sudafed is Pseudoephidrine and is a common cold medicine. Due to drug interactions the drug should be avoided with antidepressants. Commonly TCA and MAOI antidepressants react with this drug. Citalopram is a SSRI drug and the interactions with Sudafed will be minimal. Still if you suffered the symptoms like hearing sounds, vibrations with the drug its better to avoid using together.

You have stopped to take Citalopram since last three days and this may result in withdrawal symptoms of serotonin withdrawal. So I would advise you to visit your psychiatrist again to start medicine at lower doses and then to increase doses. This will prevent the withdrawal symptoms.

Thanks, hope this helps you.
