Can Intake Of I Pill Post Unprotected Sex Prevent Pregnancy?
Hi Doc, My Girl has her periods normally in the first week of every month and today is the 4th, we had unprotected sex I gave her an ipill within an hour, now I am worried if there would be ovulation and she d get pregnant, and will her periods be delayed?
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. I understand your concern. i pill is an emergency contraceptive pill. You have done the right thing by asking her to take it in an hour as the pill should be taken within 72 hours to prevent pregnancy. It prevents pregnancy by causing break through bleeding within 3 weeks from the day she have taken the pill. Based on the time of bleeding, her periods might happen early or late. Majority of times, bleeding happens in about a week from the day of taking the pill. In case bleeding doesn't happen in 3 weeks, you need to seek medical attention immediately as the pill might not have worked in preventing pregnancy. Hope the information provided is clear. All the best.
It is possible to get pregnant even after taking the pill following unprotected sex. If her periods delay, then I would advise you to do a pregnancy test.
All the best.
