Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can Intake Of Plavix Cause Any Changes With Fast Body Metabolism?
i have a stent and have been on effient for 3 months with 325 mg aspirin. the time now is for Plavix. I have been deemed a rapid metabolizer of Plavix. 75 mg is prescribed for 6 months. then, 37.5 mg per day for another 6 months. how does the rapid metabolism effect the dosage of Plavix?
Yes, it may increase the risk of bleeding. Plavix is an antiplatelet drug commonly prescribed to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in patients with acute coronary syndromes.
Plavix is a pro-drug (inactive from) which gets converted in the liver by the enzyme CYP2C19 to its active metabolite.
Because of their genetic makeup, some people process (metabolize) Plavix rapidly. As a result of increased CYP2C19 activity, active metabolite gets accumulated in the body.
However, this can result in both positive effects (reduction in the risk of serious cardiovascular events) and negative effects (increase in the risk of bleeding).
Since you were deemed to be a rapid metabolizer that is why your doctor reduced the dose of Plavix to its half of its original mainly to prevent the risk of bleeding but without reducing the risk of cardiovascular events.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
