Can Intake Of Wellbutrin Cause Positive For Meth In Drug Test?
Hi, I started taking 150mg bupropion (wellbutrin) twice a day. Today I had to take a drug test and told them before hand what I was taking...they said wellbutrin would not affect the results of the drug test. After I took the test they told me it tested positive for meth. I am so confused because I do not use any drugs and the only thing I take is the wellbutrin. How do you explain this??
No. The intake of bupropion (commonly sold under the brand name Wellbutrin) typically does not cause a positive result for methamphetamine in a drug test. Bupropion is an antidepressant medication that works differently in the brain than methamphetamine.
Standard drug tests do not typically detect bupropion as a false positive for methamphetamine. However, it is always important to inform the administering party about any medications you are taking to ensure accurate interpretation of the results and you did great by informing the authorities before test.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Muhammad Umer Farooq, General & Family Physician
