Can Knee Replacement Reduce Pain In Lower Leg While Having Arthritis In Foot And Ankle?

I am having pain in my lower leg. It is outside of leg. I mentioned to my Chiropractor and he thinks it is a muscle. I have severe arthritis in my foot and ankle on that side. I need knee replacement on that leg also. I am walking crooked and that is why he thinks it is a muscle. He wants me to get a knee replacement soon. I also have arthritis in my spine and scoliosis in my low back. Please give me your opinion.

Hello,

Knee replacement is certainly a promising procedure and you can gain most of the knee function after surgery. But your ankle and foot arthritis remain the same. Your limp will be reduced though. Arthritis of spine also can cause pain in the leg down the buttocks into the foot due to sciatic nerve compression. For ankle arthritis, the following are my recommendations:
1) Pain relieving medication like Ibuprofen and Naproxen to be taken twice daily for 14 days
2) To prevent gastric irritation, tab. Pantop before food is advised
3) If you have a heart problem or kidney dysfunction, NSAIDs are to be avoided
4) Opioids like Oxycodone, Hydrocodone and Tramadol can be used for 14 days
5) Physical therapy including therapeutic ultrasound helps reducing pain

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
