Can Ligament Injury Cause Pain And Swelling In Foot?

Hi i fell down the stairs recently and hurt my foot pretty bad. It since has swollen to excess and I cannot move my toes except for my big toe and can t rotate my ankle at all. My foot is also freezing cold at all times. X-rays showed it isn t broken but I believe it could be ligament damage, would you agree?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I understand your concern. With the fracture ruled out by the x ray, it seems that you have a third grade ankle sprain, that is a ligament injury. Rest and applying ice on swollen joint for 15 to 20 minutes at a time every hour or so will help bring down the inflammation. In addition take ibuprofen which will also help reduce the inflammation, pain and swelling.

I hope this helps.
Wishing you good health and all the best.
