Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Back in October, I had to take levonella twice within two weeks of taking it the first time. Since then, I have missed two period cycles with brown spotting and extremely light bleeding (maybe one day). I have taken three pregnancy tests all of which have been negative. Is this a normal side effect from a high dosage of the pill?
Brief answer: Yes, missed period is one of the common side effects of levonorgestrel.
Levonelle (levonorgestrel) is the hormone progestin prescribed as oral contraceptive. It is called as mini pill, since oestrogen is not included in this pill. Lenonorgestrel should be used with in 72 hours as an emergency contraceptive. It acts by making the vaginal fluid thicker, preventing ovulation and also by changing the endometrial lining. But best within 12 hours of contact. It will not be useful in abortion of the pregnant women or after 72 hours of contact. Common side effects are nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness, decreased bleeding during the regular cycle, etc.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pradeepraj, General & Family Physician
