Can Lower Doses Of Testosterone Be Advised To Older Women With Low Energy Levels And Increased Difficulty In Achieving Orgasm?
What is your opinion of prescribing low dose testosterone for older women who have exhausted all other reasons for their symptoms? Symptoms such as fatigue, hair loss, low energy, increased difficulty achieving orgasm (when it s never been a problem before), among others.
Thanks for your question. Despite the fact that most people consider testosterone to be a "male" hormone, women frequently suffer from the same symptoms of low testosterone as do men. The symptoms you mention may all be related to low testosterone levels in women, although that might not be the whole picture when considering treatment. Women make testosterone from the adrenal glands and their ovaries. Once menopause occurs, ovarian testosterone production decreases which may lead to the symptoms that you describe. Low dose testosterone replacement, in combination with other hormone balance treatments, usually eliminate or significantly reduce these symptoms. You should seek out a physician experienced in menopausal hormone balance therapy. Testosterone replacement in perimenopausal and menopausal women should not be considered controversial. Until just a few years ago, a medication called Estratest was on the market which combined estradiol with low dose testosterone for the treatment of menopausal symptoms in women. I hope this answers your questions but if you need further information, please don't hesitate to contact me.
