Can Medications For Eye Allergy Lead To Serious Eye Diseases In Later Life?
Hello Doctor,
My son is suffering from eye allergy(by pollen) since the age of 1yr.He is now 16 yrs old and still the condition is same. The problem starts for the month of Feb to April.Last two years he did not get the allergy but this year the problem started in the month of October. first he was given C Mist for 1 month then as the condition became worse Lotepred-LS was given (started with 4 times for two weeks and gradually decreased to 1 time for 2 weeks.) alongwith C mist.Again problem started so Olopat was given twice daily but with no result so Gatilox DM has been prescribed (6 times for 5 days.5 times for 5 days,4times for 5 days ......gradually decreasing to 2 times for 5 days.)alongwith olopat and a tablet Lecope-Dt for five days. Now, the problem is that my son is complaining about some vision problem like seeing things milky in light at a distance with pain in eyes. He is currently giving board exams so he has to study for long hours. Please suggest: 1.if this condition is due to medicines' side effect 2. Will he be prone to serious conditions in his old age due to such medications like cataract or glucoma etc.3.Is any advance treatment available for this problem?
I reviewed your history. Use of steroid eye drops can cause steroid induced glaucoma or cataract. Hence steroid eye drops should be used when the allergy is not responding to anti allergic eye drops. Hence I advice you to consult your eye doctor and use the steroid eye drops carefully. However use of anti allergic eye stood will not cause any serious side effects.
Thank you
