Can Meftal Be Given To Children And How Long Can Calpol Be Given?

Hi Dr,My 4 year old son is having Ear pain and Fever for last two days. We gave him Calpol DS thrice a day for 2 days and then visited a doctor who suggested a antibiotic MOX . I am continuing the same now. Still yesterday night he had 101+ fever and we gave him Meftal . I would like to know if Meftal is a strong medicine and can be continued ?How long we can continue Calpol syrup? Is there any issue in giving something sweet after Antibiotic as the tastes hurts him a lot?

Hi,

Avoid meftal unless fever is 103 or above and it can be repeated after every 6 hours. Meftal should not be used in all children and also without doctor advice. Always consider using paracetamol for fever and repeat every 4 hours if required.

Cold sponging can be done to bring down the fever. Give just steam inhalations for cold and cough and decongestant nasal drops for nasal block or increased cough on lying down. You can give something sweet after antibiotic but restrict the amount and avoid anything cold.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
