Hi Dr, my question is that I started on mirtazapine about two months ago and since that time I have been having problems with severe pain and discomfort on my left side. I had my gallbladder out about 5 years ago and follow a pretty strict diet so have had no problems there. But have been really craving the carbs since being on mirtazapine, over eating and have put on weight , I am starting to despair. As far as the drug goes for my depression it has been good. This is my Fourth try on these drugs,it s all becoming to hard.S
I can understand your concern regarding weight gain. Mirtazapine is an anti-depressant that can cause eight gain and increases appetite. Since, you have put on weight only after starting mirtazapine, it is quite possible that it is due to mirtazapine.
The decision regarding the next step should be taken after consultation with your psychiatrist. You have responded well to mirtazapine and on option could be to increase physical activity. Change in drug should be considered only after weighing all the pros and cons. In case, drug change is decided on, Bupropion as an option can be considered as it doesn't induce any weight gain.
Hope the information was helpful. Best wishes.
