Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a common cold. People say that what one does has no effect on the progress or severity, so I went skiing I am in pretty good shape but I skied hard 6 hours and really felt sick the next day. I had a fever of 100.5 and chills. The fever was gone the day after, just the sniffles remain, but I am pretty sure my muscles were competing with my immune system. How can this happen? Moms say to take it easy but many athletic coaches and trainers say that taking it easy is only about comfort. Can you enlighten me?
The common cold is a viral infection and in any infection, the body is going to use up as much resources as it needs to fight it off. Healing requires the use of a persons energy stores for the immune response to work. This is the reason that a cold in a fit , healthy person may only last a week whereas in a malnourished person with no energy stores, it would last longer.
If you use up the stores that your immune system needs, then instead of it being able to heal, it is possible to feel worse. Mums are right, rest is needed, not total bed rest but a reduction in activities for a few days.
I hope this helps
