Can Nasal Steroid Given Along With Amoxicillin And Flonase For Sinus Infection Result In Loss Of Taste And Smell?

I have a sinus infection and I went to the doctor last Thursday. He prescribed amoxicillin and a flonase spray. He also gave me a nasal steroid shot which he said would help me breathe. 24 hours later I couldn t smell or taste anything. It s been 6 days and I still can t smell or taste,,, and I don t think it s my congestion that s doing this because my nose is clear and I m not stuffed anyway. So, my question is can this be a side effect of the shot?

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hello and welcome to health care magic,

Your concern is genuine but it is unlikely that steroid will cause loss of smell as in cases of anosmia (lack of smell) due to polyps the treatment is steroid!

In any case you must continue the course of medication and add an antihistamine like levocetrizine in consultation with your doctor.

Do steam inhalation at least three times in a day for a week or so

Avoid anything cold and take everything warm

If your symptoms do not improve then you must take a CT PNS and also a nasal endoscopy and get back to me or any ENT with the reports

regards
