Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I'm a 57 yr. old male who is having problems urinating just in the morning. The rest of the day I feel a sudden urge and then the stream is fine and then at the end, drips and drabs. I do not wake up in the middle of the night to have to urinate. I do have an appt. with my dr. in a couple of days but was just curious as to if this is an "age related" issue?
I am sorry to hear that you are having urination problems mostly urgency to urinate during the day and then dribbling after finishing. The short answer is yes this can be an age related problem but it is something we can manage and I recommend you follow up with your doctor in a couple of days.
This issue of sudden urge to urinate is when the bladder is partially full and the sphincter muscle starts to spasm causing this urge. Then when you urinate you do not completely empty your bladder and hence the dribbling afterward. We have people try Kegel exercises to help strengthen the bladder sphincter muscle. It helps to tighten the sphincter and prevent the leakage. We also have medications to reduce the bladder from going into spasms
The other possibility is prostatitis or and infection in the prostrate that is irritating the bladder causing the urge feeling and incomplete emptying. Your doctor will probably do a rectal exam to determine size shape and consistency of the prostate. This is usually treated with antibiotics and can help the whole issues resolve itself.
