Can One Cortisone Injection Result In Weight Gain As Its Side Effect?

I just received one cortisone shot to my knee due to major inflammation which made it difficult for me to walk or bend my knee. The shot was given with ultra-sound guidance. I was resistant to take cortisone because of weight gain. What are my chances of weight gain with just one injection directly into the inflamed area?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Weight gain can occur with some medications including steroid injections.
With one injection , however, the chance of weight gain is slim.

Weight gain due to medications can occur by different mechanisms: (1) increase in appetite
(2)decreased fullness therefore eat more frequently
(3)decrease activity level
(4)affect metabolism

While nothing can be done regarding metabolism, if appetite is stimulated, eating healthy foods would prevent weight gain.
Consciously being as active as possible would help with this aspect.

I hope this helps
