Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
We were exposed to a child who just broke out with chicken pox (Amish family who doesn't vaccinate their children). We are four adults all over 70 and we were in close proximity to the child. Two of us remember having the pox as children but the other two can't remember. Are we now carriers? We are supposed to see our 20 month old grandson this weekend who has only had his first dose of the vaccine. Could we pass on the illness to our grandson? We are very concerned.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Chicken pox is a common childhood illness and it's generally transmitted by directly touching the blisters, saliva or mucus of an infected person, it can also be transmitted through the air by cough and sneeze. It's a very rare illnes in adults. However if any of the two other persons that don't remember to have past chicken pox develop the above symptoms might be a risk of infection, for the child.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
