Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
A friend's 19yr old has just started uni, has been stressed and overworking-has started stuttering slightly when tired -can overuse of alcohol or being in a room where others might be smoking substances cause stuttering symptoms apart from overtiredness?
Yes, this is possible. Excessive alcohol and passive smoking of drugs can be a factor in worsening of stuttering. Most substances of abuse adversely affect the brain and can result in psychological problems. Anxiety problems can often occur due to the effects of alcohol and other substances of abuse. It is well known that anxiety is one of the major causes for worsening of stuttering. So, it is very likely that the combination of stress, overworking and the effects of the substances are causing the person's sturttering to get worse. I would suggest that you advise her to reduce her alcohol intake and avoid actively or passively smoking any substances. Relaxation techniques like deep breathing, yoga, etc. can help in releiving stress and anxiety and therefore can help in reducing her stuttering.
