Can Persistent Cough Post Multiple Treatments Along With Sleep Apnea Indicate Deviated Septum?

Thank you! I ve had a cough for about 4 months. Left over from a couple bad viruses during the holidays. I ve been to the doctors about 4 times since the holidays (was also diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, HBP, and sleep apnea in Oct 2014), for checkups and then dealing with this cough. Regarding the cough, first they said that I was probably on the tail-end of bronchitis, or possibly allergies, so they gave Benzonate 200 mg and amoxicillin. That did work. Then next time they gave me a nebulizer treatment and sent me home with an inhaler. That didn t work. Then the 3rd time, they said it was my blood pressure pill that causes coughing and changed that. That didn t work. Yesterday I called the doctor because my coworkers are getting sick of me coughing, and they are treating for a sinus infection with 100 mg of Doxycycline Hyclate hyclate. Also, I was using a CPAP (trial period) and couldn t use. Yikes. Nothing very serious, but just wondering if it could be a deviated septum (since I have sleep apnea too). I asked to see a specialist. Do you think they are just trying to narrow it down? Worried a bit about the dosage of the new meds. What do you think?

Hello,

The following may be few causes of your chronic cough:
1) Post nasal drip
2) Cough variant asthma
3) Acid reflux
4) Respiratory infection
5) Chronic bronchitis
6) Use of ACE inhibitors
7) Lung cancer
8) Eosinophilic bronchitis
9) Bronchiectasis
10) Pulmonary tuberculosis

Sinus infection can cause post nasal drip and cough. Deviated nasal septum can cause headache and obstructive sleep apnea but not cough. You need to go to a pulmonologist for thorough clinical examination and few investigations like chest X-ray and sputum examination and CT chest if necessary.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Richa Agarwal, OBGYN
