Hello,

MRI brain and spinal cord must have been done to rule out any stroke as a cause of weakness of limbs. Arthritis is very common as the age advances and can't cause weakness all of a sudden. A gastrointestinal infection 2 weeks back can't cause low potassium levels now. He may be suffering from reactive arthritis after gastro intestinal infection. He needs to be seen by a neuro-physician for his lower limbs weakness and instability.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
