Can Progesterone Pills Be Taken For Heavy Bleeding, Cramps And Clotty Periods?

I don t have regular periods; never have. Not the last time, but the one before that was two years ago and it lasted for three months. I consulted a specialist and he put me on progesterone pills. I lost my insurance and couldn t afford the pills. My last period was January of 2014. I started 3 days ago and am having heavy bleeding to the point I go through 2 pads every hour and a half to two hours, including waking me up all night. I have severe cramping and clotting just about a quarter size mostly. Now I m noticing my feet are swollen and have been all day. I know I will call the doctor tomorrow, but my question is, I have two of the progesterone pills leftover from last January..... Am I ok to take them to try to get some relief in the meantime? I m miserable!

Hi,

PCOD can cause symptoms like this and will need long duration of treatment with progesterone pills. Kindly rule that out.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Harshita, Ophthalmologist
