Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 65 and have taken omeprazole for years. I am presently taking Esomeprazole Mag Dr, 40 MG daily. Is there any chance that long term usage of this drug can cause dementia? I had most of my colon removed 2 years ago and am taking the drug because of problems associated with a hiatal hernia. I have had all the tests required to have hernia surgery and only have to call my doctor to let him know I am ready for the surgery. Should I stop taking this drug and opt for the surgery?
Hello, Sir Welcome to healthcaremagic. I can certainly understand your concern. I have worked through your query in detail.
I can understand your worry regarding the long term usuage of omeprazole, actually there is some research that PPI's ie omeprazole may cause increase in levels of beta amyloid in brain ( linked to dementia ) in animal studies , but there is no clear cut evidence in humans.
So however, I would suggest you to consult your doctor regarding the stoppage of this drug as it might be required to continue for some more days post surgery as you need to take many medications during that time to prevent gastritis
Please check with your physician if he shares my view and if can prescribe these medications to you. Post your further queries if any. Thank you
