Can Prolonged Depo Usage Shot Interfere With Chances Of Conceiving?
hello , i have been on depo for about 2 years i just got off last year and my period finally came . i plan to have a child but i was told after using depo that can mess up my chances .. My period is very heavy . What are my chances of getting pregnant ?
Prolonged use of depo can cause the menstrual cycle to be suppressed (not restart) for months to a year after stopping. But in your case your natural cycle has resumed and enough time has passed that your depo use is no longer a factor in your cycle or your fertility. Your chances are the same as if you never took depo.
It can take a normally fertile couple up to six to twelve cycles to conceive. The heaviness of your cycle shouldn't influence fertility unless fibroids, infection, or some other problem is contributing to the heavy cycle.
I recommend a couple see a reproductive endocrinologist (fertility expert) if she has had regular cycle and actively tried to conceive for a year; six months if age 35 or older. I also recommend folic acid 1mg daily while trying to conceive to prevent fetal neural tube defects, and in your case a prenatal vitamin with iron may help because your periods are heavy and you have to make up the lost blood.
