Can Prostate Cancer Be Completely Cured?

Hi.....I had my prostate removed via robotic method 4.5 years ago. The cancer was contained within the prostate with no signs of spreading etc. Since then I have had my PSA checked every 6 months and this past year switched to annual. All tests have been normal . That said .....is that considered a cure . Iam 63 years old. My email YYYY@YYYY Thanks

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Recurrences may occur many years after radical prostatectomy - even more than 15 years - so 5 years is not enough time to exclude recurrence. Checking the PSA level is a good screening test for early identification of recurrences. Depending on the type of cancer the digital rectal examination may be important as well, as there are types of prostate cancer that won't cause PSA elevation. Obviously having no sign of the disease yet is definitely positive and you may already be disease free but nobody can say for sure!

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
