Pathologist and Microbiologist, Dr. Jyothi B L's Response
Hi, Yes, protein in urine, if more definitely could cause body swelling. Protein is necessary for retaining fluid in the various tissue compartments, eg: blood. If the proteins are lost, the fluid inside blood moves into the tissues leading to edema. If severe protein is lost, you can find generalized edema. If you check your serum proteins, it will also be reduced.
The cause of proteinuria is present within the kidney and it needs to be treated. Renal biopsy might be necessary along with ultrasound and MRI findings. Try to take protein rich diet to improve your serum protein levels.
