Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can Protein Supplements Cause Elevated Levels Of AST Ans ALT In Blood?
I was to see my physician yesterday for a check up as I am leaving to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in 39 days. Lab results showed an elevated AST 247 U/L and elevated ALT 110 U/L as well as elevated Ferritin 108ug/L. I have been training extensively for my climb which includes walking 20km over my lunch hours, hiking 8km with a 20lb pack on the weekend and then up to 6 hours in the gym with a combo of cardio and weights. The only additional supplements I take are 1 scoop of protein powder in my morning oatmeal and 1 protein shake mid afternoon. My eating is relatively healthy. I don't eliminate starches but I don't eat them with every meal. I don't drink alcohol, I don't smoke, I don't drink lots of pop (1/month) and I have eliminated as much aspartane from my life as possible ( I have a diabetic son so there is some small amounts on occassion) My physician has asked me to eliminate all supplements and retest this Friday and follow up with her next week. Also have an abdominal ultrasound this Friday and tests for Hepatitis. I'm just looking for a second opinion as my trip is important to me as it is to raise money for Type 1 Diabetes.
So my questions/statements are: (1) I have done some reading about exercise and elevated liver enzymes as well as protein shakes and elevated enzymes. Can you comment on this further. Will they return to normal if I just cut out the supplements? I've choose to stop exercising this week as well to see if this makes a difference. (2) I have really high iron levels in our water. Could this also be a problem for me?
