Can Proton Beam Radiation Cause Parkinson S Disease?
My husband was diagnosed with Parkinson s Disease about 4 years ago. He had proton beam irradiation for treatment of choroidal melanoma in 1994 at UC-Davis in a research study. Could the radiation caused have caused Parkinsons since the eye is so close to the brain?
I understand your concern. Parkinson's is mosty an age and genetic related neuro degenerative disorder. There is very little studies to support that Proton therapy may cause Parkinson's.
Proton therapy mostly have side effects like fatigue, skin irritation and hair loss. Also it depends on the patient's age, health and medical history.
Hope this helps, Take care. Dr Vignan Rachabattuni
