Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been sick with a cold three times this winter and typically I get sick with anything like once a decade. I just read the symptoms of leukemia and obviously I don t have that, thank goodness, but why all of a sudden am I thinking I should have gotten a flu shot or something? This isn t like me and it isn t like my mother. We have both enjoyed great immune systems. She died nine months ago with leukemia (which is why I checked). I mean seriously. We don t get sick. Can repeated flue episodes indicate leukemia?
You would find relief as repeated infection with flu does not indicate presence of leukemia. I can understand that as your mother has suffered from it, every little ailment can alarm you for that but this is not the case with you.
Taking a flu vaccine will surely help you even though it does not cover all the strains causing flu. Have habit of washing hands every now and then. You can use antihistamines like Levocetrizine (Levocet) once a day and decongestants that can give you symptomatic relief. You can also get blood test (complete blood count) to determine whether you are suffering from bacterial or viral infection as medicines for one cannot help if infection is due to other.
I hope this information helps. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. Take care.
