Can Scabs On The Scalp Occur Due To Staph Infections?
I have scabs on the back of my scalp and next and lymph nodes are swollen and hard at the back of my neck. I have also lost a good amount of weight because I have no appetite. I pick at the scabs when I m stressed, could it be a staph infection? I work at an inner city community college and many of my students are recently out of incarceration and many live in institutionalized housing.
Hello. Thanks for writing to us at healthcaremagic
I will keep a possibility of scalp infection. Underlying seborrheic dermatitis Or dandruff is usually a predisposing factor. The lymph nodes are likely reactive due to infection which is present in the area of drainage. I would suggest you to use an antidandruff shampoo e.g Nizoral, which is available OTC. It contains ketoconazole which is an effective anti fungal and anti dandruff ingredient in it. I will also suggest a week of oral antibiotics e.g either flucloxacillin Or Cephalexin for associated scalp infection. Oral antibiotics are prescription products. You may talk to your physician for the needful.
