Can Severe Food Poisoning Affect Blood Platelet Count?

My husband was in the ER for dehydration from being sick from food poisoning everything checked out except for his low platelet count of 110,000. About a year and a half ago he had blood done and the platelet count was 147,000. My question is whether or not having severe food poisoning can drop a platelet count and whether platelet count can go back up on its own

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Decreased platelet level could have happened secondary to hemopoietic vitamin deficiency secondary to food poisoning. However, platelet count of 1,10,000 is low, but acceptable.
To increase its levels, kindly give supplements of hemopoiteic vitamins Folic acid, Vitamin B12 and Vitamin C. You can check his platelet counts again after a month to look for improvement.
Hope the information provided would be useful.
All the best.
