Can Severe Itching Be Treated During Pregnancy Using Alkaline Phosphatase?
Hi Doctor, My wife is 32 weeks pregnant and she had severe itching for last several months. Doctor advised to take a Alkaline phosphatase serum test yesterday and she had a result of 195 U/L SGPT: 80 U/L SGOT: 53 U/L Having seen that doctor is now advising to have a early pregnancy (induced pain).
Can I please have your advise on this to understand the risks? When consulted with other doctor they are saying this amount (195) is not very high than normal. There is nothing to worry. Please can you advise?
Levels of alkaline phosphatase increase normally during pregnancy. So this test is not a guide to liver function in pregnancy. SGOT an SGPT are more predicitve of liver disorder.
The SGPT is slightly raised but SGOT is almost normal.
I suggest that you get a serum bilirubin test, Hepatitis B, C, A, E, and bile salts tested. These are all a guide to liver function. Also get an ultrasound of liver done along with other abdominal organs to look for any structural defects.
There is no need to induce labor pains early with your current reports. Your wife may simply be having prurigo of pregnancy a condition associated with sever itching during pregnancy and disappears after delivery. Other causes like skin infections must be ruled out after discussion with your doctor.
I suggest that you consult a physician and do the above tests. Repeat the tests after 2 weeks while keeping a watch on your wife's health and frequent visits to your obstetrician and physician.
