Can Small Avulsion Fracture Heal By Itself Without Any Cast?

I injured my foot last week by jamming my 4th and 5th toe into a door frame. Xray shows likely sesamoid at the 5th MTP joint near the head of the 5th metacarpal bone. A small avulsion fracture is less likely, as there is not obvious donor site, and due to the well-corticated bone. Due I need to worry about this? Do I need to follow up with an Orthopedic doctor?

Hi,

There is no need to worry about an avulsion fracture if there are no clear signs on X RAY. However, you could eventually do an MRI if you are still in pain. MRI will rule out an avulsion fracture.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Gonzalo Escobar, Orthopedic Surgeon
