Can Smoking And Depression Cause Persistent Migraines?
I ve been having migraines that lead to headaches for several days straight. Went to the MRI and they said they found nothing big, but still I need to ask a neurologist. It get worse when I smoke a cigarette, however I just lower my smoke habit a week before the migraines. Used to smoke bout 5 cig. a day, then I brought it down to 2 cig. a day. Also I been almost deeply depressed about a relationship break-up I m still going through. Its got me very emotional. Could the migraines be coming from any of the reasons or all?
Hello, The pattern and pain of a migraine is very typical and usually enough to diagnose it. MRI is always normal, as there is no anatomical defect. Both the issues that you have mentioned can cause migraines. And a normal MRI further augments the diagnosis of Migraine. Now there are a few steps you need to do to control the headaches. First of all quit smoking; not only does it trigger headaches, it has been proven to be a risk factor for heart disease and multiple different cancers. Secondly, if your mood stays down and you don't feel like doing much all day you should visit a psychiatrist and get help. It will help you recover much faster. Lastly, for the management of migraines, I usually prescribe my patients Tab. Inderal 10 mg thrice daily to prevent attacks, and when attacks come, Tab. Brufen 400 mg along with rest in a silent, dark room. Wishing yoh health. Regards.
