Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I take hypothyroid medicine and I eat normal diet. I have weight gain over the years. My food habit changed to Predominantely Japanese food since I moved to Japan 15 years ago and I suffer from hyperthyroid over the last 10 years. I want to understand if Soya based food could be the cause of weight gain?
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. I understand your concern. The soy bean is a species of legume and is an edible bean which has numerous uses. 100g serving of soya beans gives 173 kcal and contains 17g protein, 1g saturated fat, 10g crabohydrate and 6g fibre. Hence it is a high protein and low calorie food, which does not cause weight gain. The high fibre content makes soya beans and other soya containing foods valuable in cases of constipation, high cholesterol and type -2 diabetes. Also it has numerous health benefits like lowering risk of breast cancer, improving symptoms of oestrogen dominance such as Pre-Menstrual Syndrome and endometriosis. Hope the information provided would be helpful. All the best.
